Masks have symbolic and ritualistic significance and are attributed with the power to express the spirit or being they represent. These Japanese, theatrical Noh masks also change expression according to the lighting and angle at which they are put on. The character of the painting itself also changes constantly due to the background covered in 24K gold leaf. In different lighting conditions, the overall appearance of the painting changes completely, one part of the painting becomes brighter, while another part becomes covered in shadow...
The Mini Tokonoma series consists of six watercolours set deep in the frame, creating an imaginary niche of the tokonoma, an important part of Japanese architecture. Gold is present in each of the works in this series, which reacts differently each time when the light is reflected, enhancing the depth of each scene in the painting. D. B.
