Artist's profile

Jolana Škachová explores different boundaries through her work. Shee often creates her works in cycles that connect specific themes. She finds it in everyday situations, but also in books, fairy tales, or art itself.

“I love language and stories. Both of these concepts are key to my work. As a painter, I do not use words, but visual sensations. Even if the words seem more apt, isn't that why the picture is more of an adventure?“

The author is based on the reality of ordinary things that we know intimately. By abstracting and modifying them, she makes them ambiguous, even mysterious. "My paintings can be interpreted in many different ways. They are intentionally ambiguous. I believe that this is how I can talk to the viewer really freely. I understand this space between the viewer and the work as an important quality. In a few strokes and colors, I draw a recognizable situation, which then becomes a pun or a puzzle.“

In the spirit of this poetics, the cycle of paintings "Wardrobe" also unfolds. As the name itself suggests, clothes, piles of rags, laundry, etc., play the leading role. The theme is narrative, intimate and playful.

The drawing cycle "Listening to a Bad Song" evolved from the "Wardrobe" cycle.

"I am even more interested in space in my drawings. The space bounded by substances. A hidden space that encourages an unusual narrative.”
