Echoes of Art Prague
Published 2023-11-12
The 22nd edition of the Art Prague contemporary art fair took place in Prague during the first week of November 2023. It offered works from almost all art disciplines, from painting, drawing, and graphics to sculpture and installation.
Among the exhibitors were also artists associated with the online gallery Young Real Art, which represents young Czech and Slovak artists who study at art schools or are recent graduates. The following artists were represented at the fair:
- Dorota Branná
- Eva Fajčíková
- Jan Harant
- Jan Heres
- Jaroslava Kadlecová
- Adam Kencki
- Matěj Lipavský
- David Mazanec
- Alžběta Rajchlová
- Pavel Samlík
- Leoš Suchan
- Filip Švehla
- Adam Velíšek
Most of them presented their latest works and key pieces in their careers.
The main artwork in our exhibition was the painting "Stoupání" by David Mazanec. Perseverance, determination, and freedom are the attributes that this painting should carry. The athlete from the author's perspective symbolizes a human being as such - his life essence, striving, and rides up and down hills. The painting "Stoupání" was installed in a dominant place above the marble fireplace, and this work was featured in the Art Prague catalog.
Filip Švehla and his large-format work "Bambulele" characterized by its bold, bright colors, really cannot be overlooked. It was one of the most photographed works at the fair. Soon, a new piece inspired by Filip's stay in NYC will appear on the YRA website. The work "Bambulele" was also featured in the introduction to the ČT ART news program "About Art Prague" on November 3, 2023.
Jan Heres presented new brightly colored figurative works: paintings charged with emotions plus two glazed ceramic sculptures. The paintings characterized by their glowing colors and expressive figures are presented at the fair every year, but the new paintings that Heres presented at Art Prague are more schematic and lighter, although they are a continuation of his previous work and we can still feel the influence of his last artistic residency in Miami and his studies in Indonesia.
Leoš Suchan paints his realistic paintings with unusual subjects with absolute precision. He puts everyday objects into compositions and creates still lifes that refer to historical works. This connection is precisely what is fun in "Still life with a kettle" or in the beautiful colors and composition of the painting "Light and Structures I".
Eva Fajčíková is presented with a novelty "Gameboy" with interchangeable screens. This direction into the field of platform games aims at exploring archetypal places, such as ruins, forests, portals, etc., each painting becomes an individual level in a fictional game that the viewer can visually explore.
Jan Harant draws inspiration for his favorite landscape paintings and paintings with figurative subjects from the streets and suburbs of Prague. This time he chose softer pastel tones, which are in beautiful contrast to the usual busy Prague life. "By the river" is a painting painted in the open air, in the author's favorite Modřany.
Matěj Lipavský and his two new 150 cm paintings inspired by the author's own garden will draw the viewer into the spring blossoming flowering scene (Flowering garden and Lemon and flowering cherry).
Adam Kencki was the only one to have a photograph at the fair: "Gladiolus". The beauty and perfection of the gladiolus in Adam's interpretation is further multiplied in his black-and-white photograph measuring 71 x 53 cm.
Jaroslava Kadlecová and her two new medium formats "On the Path I" and "On the Path II" thematically return to the fascination with Czech architecture in connection with the landscape, all perfectly connected in pastel geometry.
Alžběta Rajchlová translated her fascination with the nature of New Zealand (where she returned from an internship) into breathtaking paintings. The series "In the Depths" and the painting "They are flying to the lake" are inspired by the shapes of seaweed that she found washed up on New Zealand beaches.
Pavel Samlík this time drew the viewer into the film action of his favorite film "The Celebration of Snowdrops" with his realistic paintings with landscape motifs. In the painting "Apple Relax", everyone immediately recognizes Rudolf Hrušínský in his role as Jarin Franc.
And we must not forget the central work of our exhibition, which was "The Sperm Whale" by Adam Velíšek. The bronze specimen of one of the largest whales is presented in Adam's interpretation as a delicate, beautiful little specimen, whose golden-green rendering is more than fitting.
Thank you to everyone for visiting!
