Low-Cost Carrier
Vámos János
Low-Cost Carrier, 2023
150 x 180 cm
acrylic on canvas
The painting was created during a residency in Budapest at the Hungarian Art and Business institution.
“I am fascinated by the religious nature of consumer society. Certain religious motifs have been replaced by things that are more consumerist attitudes. It is interesting that as people have become accustomed to consumerism, the objects that belong to people have become almost part of their identity. The car is a good example of this. It is essentially a symbol of freedom and free movement. The context in which we exist is the age of information, movement, and speed. The car is the subject of this movement and speed. Your car represents you, but to a certain extent you also represent your car, because in order to have a car, you have to sacrifice some of your life. It serves you, but you also serve it. You earn what you will later spend on the car. Despite this, in some way it gives us so much, whether emotionally or practically, that people accept that it is associated with this sacrifice. I try to portray cars as entities, I am interested in the relationship between man and object. As an "extended self." When you get into a car, you are part of the machine, you control what surrounds you with your physical movement, and if I take transportation as a context, you and the car are one entity.”
