Pomegranate, 2023

50 x 40 cm (frame)

32 x 25 cm (painting)

Watercolor, gouache, ink

Framed, black passe-partout

The initial illusion of harmony is shattered in the central point of the painting, the pomegranate. This fruit is usually a symbol of fertility and abundance. However, it is now full of poison and transforms anyone who tastes it. The second significant motif is a mask holding a sprig of buckthorn; an inconspicuous, beautiful, but poisonous and invasive shrub. I like to depict masks, they can be very metaphorical, but they always force us to ask what is hidden behind them and, above all, why... The painting is made on handmade paper of very high weight, so the substrate has a pronounced structure and a pleasant ivory color.
