The Painter with the White Cane

When Tatiana Kucharova Foundation - The Beauty of help asked the Young Real Art for help with preparing an exhibition - Ladislav Machacek, The Painter with the White Cane - it was accepted with enthusiasm. The Beauty of Help Foundation focuses on helping seniors to lead dignified lives as well as on preventing senior's exclusion from society.

Ladislav Machacek is an 86 years old, Czech painter, who had been visually impaired since his youth, and, later, lost his sight completely. Despite that, he pursued a distinctive artistic career, creating a large body of work. The Painter with the White Cane is his 7th solo exhibition, and focuses on his oil paintings from 1960 to 1990. The exhibition is currently taking place at the gallery of Villa Pelle, a neo-reanaissance villa in Prague.

The Painter with the White Cane bases on a common theme - the everyday; scenes from the artist's childhood, his home town, nearby forests and meadows, his country house in Kostelec Upon Elbe, and, of course, women. The ordinary is suppressed by the authentic rendering of the paintings as well as by a hint of mystery - while working on his paintings, Ladislav Machacek made many trips to plain air, usually at night. Central to the exhibition is a piece called Leto na Labi (Summer on Elbe), 1962, which depicts a summer's afternoon in Jirice, a village on the bank of the river Elbe. Perfectly formed clouds, the river which is almost completely still, and local women, frozen in time, that all bring a feeling of tranquility to the painting. The identities of the women, similarly as in the other Machacek's paintings, remain uncovered.

The Private View took place in a warm, congenial atmosphere, and Ladislav Machacek raised a glass to the cirle of his close friends and fans.
