Black Bamboo, 2023

Mini tokonoma series

14 x 14 cm (painting)

16 x 16 cm (frame)

Framed

A fusion of two significant, symbol-laden elements, both associated with longevity and strength, simplicity and happiness. I wanted to depict the macaque as a brooding, slightly melancholic and pensive being, and the bamboo as a changing, impermanent element. It is gilded with 24K, gold leaf.

The Mini Tokonoma series comprises six watercolours set deep within the frame, creating an imaginary niche of the tokonoma, an important part of Japanese architecture. Gold is present in each of the works in this series, which reacts differently each time when the light is reflected, enhancing the depth of each scene in the painting. D. B.
