Massive Cuties Series

60 x 60 cm

mixed media: oil and acrylic on canvas

Cars have recently played an important role in my work, partly because of their representative role in pop culture, as a superficial indicator of male identity, but also because of the experience of driving, the dialogue between man and machine. As Roland Barthes said, the car as an object is in many ways inevitable in the age of speed.

"I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals; I mean the supreme work of an epoch, invented with passion by unknown artists and consumed in image, if not in use, by an entire population that appropriates them as a purely magical object."

In the "Massive Cuties" series, I try to create a visual language in which the cars are at once monumental and hard-hitting, yet cute to the point of being childish.

With black oil paint, I want to convey that garage oil smell, soaked in testosterone fumes. These works critically analyze through irony the fragile and controversial nature of hypermasculinity. J. V.
